Veteran Ghanaian gospel musician Yaw Sarpong has passed away. He died on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Emena Hospital in Kumasi, where he had been receiving medical care.
The sad news was confirmed by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis, bringing to an end years of public concern about the musician’s health. Yaw Sarpong had battled ill health for some time and had occasionally stepped back from active performances to focus on recovery.
Widely regarded as a pioneer of contemporary Ghanaian gospel music, Yaw Sarpong rose to national prominence as the leader of the celebrated Asomafo Gospel Band. With the group, he produced several timeless gospel classics that significantly influenced the growth and direction of Akan gospel music in Ghana.

Among his most popular songs are “Wo Haw Ne Hwan,” “Tie Obiaa,” “Aduro Yesu,” and “Awurade Kasa,” which remain staples in churches and Christian gatherings across the country.
His death comes barely a month after the passing of Maame Tiwa, a key member of the Asomafo Gospel Band, a loss that had already deeply impacted the gospel music fraternity.
In recognition of his immense contribution to Ghana’s music industry, Yaw Sarpong was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
Yaw Sarpong’s legacy as a trailblazer of gospel music in Ghana will continue to live on through his songs and the countless lives he inspired through his ministry.
