Highway Robbers Kill Footballer in Late-Night Attack at Ahyiresu; Police Launch Manhunt

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched a manhunt for a group of armed robbers who attacked passengers along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road late Sunday night, leaving one person dead and others traumatized.

According to a police statement, the incident occurred around 10:30 pm on April 12, 2026, when six armed men, three of whom were carrying pump-action guns, ambushed a VIP bus traveling from Samreboi to Berekum.

The bus, with registration number AM 9334-20, was transporting approximately 30 football players and officials of Berekum Chelsea. In an attempt to escape the attackers, the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to skid off the road into a nearby bush.

During the attack, a footballer identified as Dominic Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but sadly died while receiving treatment.

Another victim, 52-year-old George Owusu Afriyie, was robbed of GHS 4,500 during the incident.

Police officers who responded to distress calls retrieved two spent BB cartridges from the scene, which are expected to aid ongoing investigations.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has since deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to the area as part of efforts to track down and arrest the suspects.

In a statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit for the Ashanti Region, authorities assured the public that every effort is being made to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“The Police assure the public that the perpetrators will be arrested within the shortest possible time,” the statement said.

Residents and road users have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies as investigations continue.
