Police Arrest Suspect Over Illegal Assault Rifle in Bawku

The Ghana Police Service in the Upper East Region has taken custody of a 27-year-old man, Abdul Basit, for unlawful possession of an assault rifle in Bawku.

According to an official statement from the Upper East Regional Police Command, the suspect was initially apprehended by a military patrol team on April 13, 2026, during a security operation at Sakabo, a suburb of Bawku.

The arrest followed reports of gunfire in the area. The patrol team, upon hearing the shots, quickly moved to the scene, where they spotted the suspect attempting to flee into a nearby room. He was subsequently pursued and arrested.

A search conducted in the room led to the discovery of an AK-47 assault rifle loaded with 31 rounds of ammunition. During interrogation, Abdul Basit reportedly admitted ownership of the weapon.

The suspect has since been handed over to the police and is currently in custody, assisting with ongoing investigations. Authorities have confirmed that he will be arraigned before court to face charges in accordance with the law.

The incident highlights ongoing security concerns in parts of the Upper East Region, particularly in Bawku, where authorities continue to intensify efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal weapons and maintain public safety.
