Police Arrest Suspect Over Illegal Assault Rifle in Bawku
The Ghana Police Service in the Upper East Region has taken custody of a 27-year-old man, Abdul Basit, for unlawful possession of an assault rifle in Bawku.
According to an official statement from the Upper East Regional Police Command, the suspect was initially apprehended by a military patrol team on April 13, 2026, during a security operation at Sakabo, a suburb of Bawku.
The arrest followed reports of gunfire in the area. The patrol team, upon hearing the shots, quickly moved to the scene, where they spotted the suspect attempting to flee into a nearby room. He was subsequently pursued and arrested.
