Former Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has officially declared his intention to contest for the Flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), signaling a significant development in the party’s internal race ahead of the 2026 general elections.
In a solemn yet powerful announcement made on Wednesday, Dr. Adutwum expressed his readiness to lead the NPP into a new era, affirming that he would formally file his nomination once the party opens the process.
“With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the Flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party,” he stated.

The former education minister, known for spearheading significant reforms in Ghana’s education sector, emphasized his commitment to building a progressive and inclusive Ghana. He said his decision is driven by a deep sense of duty to continue the legacy of service, innovation, and national transformation.
Dr. Adutwum, who is also the Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, is widely respected for his technocratic leadership style and data-driven approach to governance. His tenure at the Ministry of Education saw the implementation of key policies such as STEM education promotion, TVET expansion, and reforms in curriculum and teacher training.
Political analysts view his entry into the NPP flagbearership race as a move that could reshape the internal dynamics of the party, potentially appealing to both the grassroots base and the intellectual wing of the NPP.
While other prominent figures within the party are also rumored to be eyeing the coveted position, Dr. Adutwum’s early declaration sets the stage for a spirited and policy-centered campaign.
Supporters and political observers are now keenly watching the NPP’s next steps regarding the opening of nominations and the party’s timetable for selecting its next presidential candidate.
If successful, Dr. Adutwum would become the first former education minister to lead the New Patriotic Party into a national election.
