The Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, on Saturday joined the chiefs and people of Effutu to celebrate the 2026 edition of the Aboakyer Festival, reaffirming government’s commitment to cultural preservation and local economic development.
The colourful festival, held annually in Winneba, also coincided with the 30th anniversary of the reign of Oma Odefe Neenyi Ghartey VII, whose leadership the Vice President described as exemplary and instrumental in sustaining peace and development in the area.
Addressing a large gathering of traditional leaders, residents, and visitors, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that the Aboakyer festival remains a vital platform for rediscovering, preserving, and promoting Ghanaian identity. She emphasised that such cultural celebrations play a critical role in strengthening national unity while positioning local communities as key drivers of tourism.

“The Aboakyer festival is not only a celebration of heritage but also an opportunity to unlock the economic potential of Effutu,” she said.
She disclosed that government is prioritising investments in access roads, infrastructure, and cultural enterprises to transform Effutu into a vibrant tourism hub capable of attracting both domestic and international visitors. According to her, these efforts are expected to create jobs and stimulate local economic activity.
Highlighting broader national policies, the Vice President reiterated government’s commitment to initiatives aimed at empowering citizens and expanding economic opportunities. She cited the proposed Women’s Development Bank as a key intervention to improve access to finance for market women, fish processors, and small-scale entrepreneurs.
She further indicated that the government is advancing its 24-hour economy policy, with plans underway to establish 24-hour markets across the country to boost productivity and commercial activity.
On youth development, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang pointed to programmes such as Adwumawura, which are designed to support young people in transforming their ideas into viable businesses, thereby reducing unemployment and fostering innovation.
The Vice President also underscored the importance of strategic infrastructure projects, particularly the Kasoa–Winneba road, describing it as critical to enhancing connectivity and driving regional economic transformation.
She commended the people of Effutu for their continued commitment to peace and harmony, noting that such unity provides a strong foundation for sustainable development.
“As we celebrate this year’s Aboakyer, we are reminded that progress is sustained through unity and collaboration,” she added.
The Aboakyer festival, one of Ghana’s most celebrated traditional events, draws thousands of participants each year and continues to serve as a symbol of cultural pride and community resilience.
