Mahama Reaffirms Commitment to Inclusive Development After Meeting Eastern Regional Chiefs

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his administration’s commitment to inclusive and balanced national development following a high-level engagement with the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs.

The meeting, led by Nene Sakite II, formed part of ongoing consultations between government and traditional authorities aimed at strengthening collaboration for national progress.

During the courtesy call, President Mahama highlighted signs of economic recovery, pointing to improved macroeconomic stability, declining inflation, a strengthening local currency, and Ghana’s ability to meet its debt obligations despite global economic pressures.

He also disclosed that government is taking steps to operationalize the University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences (UEAS) at Bunso, a move expected to boost education and innovation in agriculture and engineering. According to the President, this initiative forms part of broader investments in infrastructure, healthcare, and local governance.

A key policy highlighted was the uncapping of the District Assembly Common Fund, which now allows Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies to retain up to 80 percent of their allocations. The President explained that this measure is intended to accelerate grassroots development, including the rollout of 24-hour economy markets across the country.

Despite the progress made, President Mahama acknowledged that youth unemployment remains a pressing challenge. He emphasized the need to drive private sector growth, promote industrialization, and expand agricultural opportunities to create sustainable jobs for young people.

On healthcare, the President assured the chiefs of government’s commitment to completing the Eastern Regional Hospital project. He further announced plans to commence three new hospital projects nationwide to enhance access to quality healthcare.

He noted that flagship initiatives such as Free Primary Health Care and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCares, will continue to play a central role in improving the wellbeing of citizens.

President Mahama concluded by expressing appreciation to traditional leaders for their continued support, stressing that strong collaboration between government and traditional authorities is essential for achieving long-term, sustainable development.
