Two Armed Robbers Shot Dead After MoMo Attack in Tema

Two suspected armed robbers have been shot dead following a robbery incident targeting a mobile money vendor in Tema, according to the Ghana Police Service.

The incident occurred on Monday morning at about 8:30 a.m. at Aba Fosuah Plaza in Community 5, where the victim operates a Mobile Money (MoMo) business. Preliminary investigations reveal that one of the suspects, riding as a pillion passenger on a motorbike, approached the vendor under the pretext of making a cash-out transaction.

As the vendor retrieved her phone to process the transaction, the suspect allegedly pulled out a pistol and demanded her bag containing cash. The victim resisted, prompting the motorbike rider to join in a struggle. During the confrontation, the pillion passenger shot the victim in the leg, forcing her to surrender the bag. The suspects then fled the scene on the motorbike.

A patrol team from the Tema Regional Operations Unit, which had been deployed nearby for security duties, responded swiftly to a distress call and pursued the suspects.

Police say that upon reaching a junction near Smart Hotel in Community 6, the suspects opened fire on the pursuing officers. The police returned fire, and in the ensuing exchange, both suspects sustained gunshot wounds and fell off their motorbike.

The injured suspects were transported to the Police Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival. Their bodies have since been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy.

A search conducted on the suspects led to the recovery of a black 9mm Luger pistol loaded with ammunition, three Android mobile phones, assorted SIM cards, a talisman, a Royal motorbike key, and an amount of GH¢11,390. Police also retrieved a spent cartridge at the robbery scene.

Further investigations revealed that a Ghana Card found in the possession of the suspects belongs to the victim.

Meanwhile, the victim, who sustained a gunshot wound to her leg, is currently receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.

The Tema Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring public safety and urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
