Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee Concludes Northern Sector Sittings in Tamale

The Public Accounts Committee of Parliament has successfully concluded its Northern Sector zonal public sittings, marking a significant step in strengthening financial accountability and oversight across public institutions.

Held over several days in Tamale, the sittings brought together Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), as well as key public institutions, to respond to findings outlined in the 2024 Auditor-General’s Reports.

The exercise forms part of the constitutional mandate of the Parliament of Ghana to ensure transparency, accountability, and the prudent use of public funds.

Key Audit Reports Reviewed

During the sittings, the Committee examined critical issues raised in multiple audit reports, including:

  • Auditor-General’s report on the management and utilization of the District Assemblies’ Common Fund and other statutory funds (year ended December 31, 2024)
  • Auditor-General’s report on the accounts of District Assemblies for the 2024 financial year
  • Auditor-General’s report on public accounts relating to public universities and colleges of education
  • Auditor-General’s report on public accounts relating to pre-university educational institutions

These reports highlighted financial irregularities, compliance gaps, and areas requiring improved fiscal discipline across the public sector.

Strengthening Accountability at the Local Level

The zonal public sittings continue to serve as a vital platform for holding public officials accountable and ensuring that institutions entrusted with state resources operate with integrity and efficiency.

Officials who appeared before the Committee were required to respond to audit queries and provide clarifications on financial management practices within their respective organizations.

Commitment to Protecting Public Funds

The Committee commended the cooperation of stakeholders, including the Auditor-General’s team, public officials, and the media, for their role in ensuring a smooth and transparent process.

Authorities reaffirmed that Parliament of Ghana remains committed to safeguarding the public purse and ensuring that every cedi of taxpayer money is properly accounted for.

The Public Accounts Committee is expected to continue similar zonal sittings across other parts of the country as part of ongoing efforts to promote good governance and fiscal responsibility.
