Veteran Gospel Musician Yaw Sarpong Passes On
Veteran Ghanaian gospel musician Yaw Sarpong has passed away. He died on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Emena Hospital in Kumasi, where he had been receiving medical care.
The sad news was confirmed by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis, bringing to an end years of public concern about the musician’s health. Yaw Sarpong had battled ill health for some time and had occasionally stepped back from active performances to focus on recovery.
Widely regarded as a pioneer of contemporary Ghanaian gospel music, Yaw Sarpong rose to national prominence as the leader of the celebrated Asomafo Gospel Band. With the group, he produced several timeless gospel classics that significantly influenced the growth and direction of Akan gospel music in Ghana.
