Mahama Inspects New Transformers in Tamale, Promises Improved Power Stability in Northern Ghana

John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to stabilising electricity supply across Ghana following an inspection of newly acquired transformers at the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) yard in Tamale.

The visit forms part of his ongoing #ResettingGhanaTour of the Northern Region, aimed at assessing infrastructure and advancing development initiatives. During the inspection, Mahama noted that many transformers currently in use have become overstretched due to increasing electricity demand over the years.

According to him, much of Ghana’s power infrastructure was installed decades ago and is now serving a significantly larger population, contributing to frequent instability in supply. He stressed that upgrading and expanding the country’s energy infrastructure remains a top priority.

Mahama expressed optimism about the future of Ghana’s energy sector, revealing plans to localise transformer production to boost capacity and ensure long-term sustainability. He also commended the efforts of both NEDCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in maintaining power distribution despite existing challenges.

Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, who accompanied the President, disclosed that the government has moved into the deployment phase of high-capacity transformers across the Northern operational zone.

He indicated that although approximately 400 transformers were initially requested for the region, the government has increased the number to 500 to significantly improve power distribution and reduce system overload. He appealed to residents for patience as installation efforts continue.

The transformer deployment is part of broader reforms under the #ResettingGhana agenda, which seeks to modernise the country’s energy infrastructure and deliver reliable, efficient electricity supply nationwide.
