Government will abolish E-Levy in its first budget- Dr Ato Forson

The Minister of Finance designate, Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, has promised to abolish the e-levy in the first budget of the government. Speaking during his appearance at the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, he said “my position on the e-levy is not new. It has not changed and I still stand by my position to abolish it”. Dr Ato Forson said his position on the e-levy does not mean that he does not appreciate the need for revenue. He added “however, the e-levy is neither a direct, an indirect or excise tax”. Dr Ato Forson said e-levy retards progress towards financial inclusion and a cash-lite economy. “When approved, I will abolish the e-elevy in my first budget”, he said. Police have warned people against engaging in violence Police in Ghana have arrested more than 100 people - mostly opposition supporters of President-elect John Mahama - over acts of lawlessness. The irate supporters also torched two electoral commission offices due to a delay in announcing the outcome of Saturday's elections and disagreements over some parliamentary results. Mahama has condemned the vandalism and called on President Nana Akufo-Addo and security agencies to "act decisively" in addressing the violence. Vice-President Bawumia, the defeated presidential ...

More jobs and no ‘nuisance taxes’ – Ghanaians’ great expectations

Ghana's former President John Mahama will be under enormous pressure to meet the expectations of voters following his landslide victory in Saturday's election.  He swept back to power after eight years in opposition, running what political analyst Nansata Yakubu described as a "masterclass" in campaigning.  He defeated Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia by 56.6% of votes to 41.6% to notch up the biggest margin of victory by a candidate in 24 years. But voter turnout was lower than in the 2020 election, especially in some of the heartlands of Bwaumia's New Patriotic Party (NPP), suggesting some people there - disillusioned with its performance in government - stayed at home.  As Mahama's supporters celebrated his victory, Belinda Amuzu - a teacher in the northern cit...

However, the atmosphere heading into the 2024 elections was markedly different. While the party had delivered some key reforms and infrastr...
