The Minority Caucus in Parliament has congratulated Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia following his decisive victory in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary held on 31 January 2026, describing the outcome as a clear mandate from party delegates nationwide and in the diaspora.
In a statement signed by the Minority Leader, Osahen Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Caucus, on behalf of its 87 Members of Parliament, praised Dr. Bawumia for a campaign marked by “vision, intellectual rigour and resolute commitment to Ghana’s progress,” noting that his election positions the party strongly ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The statement acknowledged the calibre of competition in the primary, which featured Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, describing the contest as a demonstration of the NPP’s enduring commitment to internal democracy.

While admitting that the primary period witnessed moments of tension, the Minority Caucus emphasized that such dynamics are inherent in competitive democratic processes. It called for reconciliation and unity across all party structures, urging aspirants, supporters, delegates, and executives to rally behind Dr. Bawumia’s leadership. According to the Caucus, lessons from the 2024 electoral defeat underscore that unity is not merely symbolic but fundamental to electoral success.
Reaffirming confidence in the party’s grassroots, the statement paid tribute to constituency executives, polling station organizers, and volunteers across the country for their tireless efforts. The Caucus encouraged them to refocus their energies on supporting the new flagbearer while holding the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) accountable.
The Minority Caucus pledged its full support to Dr. Bawumia, highlighting the collective experience of current and former NPP Members of Parliament who delivered landmark policies during previous administrations, including Free Senior High School, major infrastructure projects, and digital economy initiatives. This experience, the statement said, will be leveraged as the party prepares for 2028.
Turning attention to governance, the Caucus outlined key areas it intends to scrutinize, including concerns over the depletion of gold reserves, alleged losses linked to gold trading schemes, challenges in public transportation, deteriorating international relations, the persistent menace of illegal mining (galamsey), and limited employment opportunities for the youth.
Addressing the Ghanaian public, the statement declared that the NPP is “united, renewed, and prepared” to offer accountable governance, economic revival, and inclusive prosperity. The Caucus expressed confidence that under Dr. Bawumia’s leadership—guided by lessons from 2024—the party is well-positioned to restore hope and deliver visionary governance.
The statement concluded with a vision of a post-2028 Ghana characterized by an efficient Free SHS programme, broad-based economic prosperity, and strengthened democratic governance across Africa.
“Dr. Bawumia, on behalf of the Minority Caucus, we congratulate you once more on this well-deserved victory,” the statement said. “Ghana awaits the restoration of visionary governance.”
