The European Union in Ghana is spearheading efforts to promote sustainable cocoa production through its support for the Deforestation-Free Cocoa (DFC) Project, aimed at protecting forests while securing the livelihoods of cocoa farmers.
The initiative comes at a time when global expectations around sustainable sourcing are intensifying, particularly under regulatory frameworks such as the EU Deforestation Regulation, which requires cocoa and other commodities entering the European market to be traceable and free from deforestation.
Across key cocoa-producing areas — Asunafo-Asutifi, Sefwi-Wiawso-Bibiani, and Juaboso-Bia — identified as Hotspot Intervention Areas, the project is supporting smallholder farmers to adopt climate-smart and deforestation-free farming practices. These interventions are designed to ensure that Ghanaian cocoa remains competitive and compliant with international standards.

Through the programme, farmers are being trained in improved farm management techniques, including better land use planning and the integration of agroforestry systems. These approaches encourage the preservation of tree cover on cocoa farms while enhancing productivity and long-term sustainability.
The project is being implemented by a consortium of organisations, including Solidaridad West Africa, Tropenbos Ghana, Rights and Advocacy Initiatives Network, and TaylorCrabbe Initiative, with funding from the European Union in Ghana.
Stakeholders say the long-term benefits of the initiative go beyond compliance with international trade rules. By promoting sustainable land use, the project is expected to improve soil health, strengthen farmers’ resilience to climate change, and reduce pressure on Ghana’s remaining forest reserves.
Ultimately, the Deforestation-Free Cocoa Project represents a critical step toward balancing environmental protection with economic growth in one of Ghana’s most important agricultural sectors, while ensuring that cocoa farmers continue to access lucrative global markets.
