Global Politics Cast Shadow Over World Cup 2026

By Henry Okyere, U.S. Correspondent

WASHINGTON — Global political tensions and disputes over travel and visa policies are fuelling talk of withdrawals ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, even as organisers insist the expanded tournament remains on track.

The World Cup, to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico in June and July 2026, will feature a record 48 teams. But recent U.S. immigration measures and broader geopolitical frictions have prompted concerns among some governments, players and advocacy groups about access for fans, officials and support staff.

While no national football association has formally announced plans to pull out, several countries have privately raised concerns with FIFA over visa uncertainty and entry requirements, according to sources familiar with the discussions. Online speculation about boycotts has intensified in recent weeks, driven by political rhetoric and criticism of U.S. domestic policies.

U.S. authorities have said hosting the tournament does not alter existing immigration laws, stressing that match tickets do not guarantee entry. FIFA has echoed that stance, urging fans and delegations to comply with host-country requirements while saying it is working with governments to facilitate travel for accredited teams and officials.

Some players have publicly criticised the political climate surrounding the tournament, warning that restrictive policies risk undermining the World Cup’s image as an open, global event. Advocacy groups argue that any perception of exclusion could damage the competition’s credibility and fan engagement.

FIFA officials have sought to play down withdrawal talk, describing it as speculative and insisting preparations remain unaffected. However, analysts say the issue highlights the growing intersection of sport and geopolitics, particularly as mega-events become entangled with domestic political debates.

With months remaining before kickoff, diplomats and football officials face mounting pressure to ensure political tensions do not escalate into actions that could disrupt the world’s biggest sporting tournament.
