The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed deep concern over reported military strikes carried out by the United States in coordination with Israeli forces against targets inside the Islamic Republic of Iran.
In a press statement released on Thursday, the Commission described the development as a serious intensification of hostilities in the Middle East, warning that the situation risks spiraling into a broader regional conflict with global consequences.
Call for Restraint and Dialogue

H.E. Mr. Youssouf called on all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and urgently de-escalate tensions. He stressed that actions taken by states must be in full compliance with international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter to safeguard international peace and security.
“The path to sustainable peace lies in diplomacy, not force,” the Chairperson emphasized, urging renewed commitment to dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes.
Warning Over Global and African Impact
The African Union Commission cautioned that further escalation could worsen global instability, particularly affecting energy markets, food security, and economic resilience.
According to the statement, African countries—many of which are already grappling with economic pressures and conflict-related challenges—could face severe repercussions from disruptions in global supply chains and rising fuel prices.
The Chairperson underscored that Africa remains vulnerable to external shocks and that instability in the Middle East could compound ongoing socio-economic difficulties across the continent.
Support for Mediation Efforts
The Commission also encouraged diplomatic engagement through ongoing international mediation efforts, including initiatives facilitated by the Sultanate of Oman.
Mr. Youssouf reiterated the African Union’s support for all constructive diplomatic channels aimed at preventing further deterioration and upholding the international rules-based order.
The African Union Commission reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace, stability, and multilateral cooperation as essential pillars for global security.
