The Ghana Armed Forces has successfully rescued 71 Ghanaian fishermen who were left stranded at sea following a robbery attack approximately 35 nautical miles off the coast of Gomoa Nyanyano and Senya Bereku in the Central Region.

According to a statement signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations for the Ghana Navy, the search and rescue operation began at dawn after reports emerged that armed robbers had attacked several fishing boats operating in the area.

The attackers reportedly seized outboard motors and personal belongings, leaving the fishermen helpless at sea. Affected vessels included Argentina 2, Argentina 3, Sea Lion, and Berema Nsukwa, among others.

The rescue mission was spearheaded by the Ghana Navy, with support from the Ghana Air Force and local fishermen from the Nyanyano and Senya Bereku communities. The Ghana Navy’s Special Boat Squadron deployed fast interceptor boats, backed by additional naval ships from the Eastern and Western Naval Commands.

As a result of the coordinated efforts, 24 of the victims were safely evacuated to Tema, while 47 others were brought ashore at Senya Bereku.

Interviews conducted with the rescued fishermen confirmed that no Ghanaian fisherman was kidnapped during the incident.

The Ghana Navy has since intensified patrols within Ghana’s Exclusive Economic Zone, particularly around the affected area, as authorities continue to assess the situation.

The Ghana Armed Forces has urged fishermen and other maritime users to exercise caution and promptly report any suspicious activities at sea.

The military also expressed appreciation to the Member of Parliament for the area, Gizella Tetteh Agbotui, as well as fisherfolk and residents of Senya Bereku, for their timely support which contributed significantly to the success of the rescue mission.

The Ghana Navy reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Ghanaian fishermen, combating piracy and armed robbery at sea, and ensuring the safety of vessels operating within Ghana’s maritime domain.
