Ahmed Musa Retires from International Football After 15 Years with Super Eagles

Former Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing to an end a remarkable career that spanned nearly 15 years in Nigeria’s national colours.

In an emotional message addressed to Nigerians and the Super Eagles family, Musa described his journey with the national team as one filled with pride, sacrifice, and deep gratitude. He recalled his early days as a young player receiving simultaneous invitations to the U-20, U-23 and senior national teams, noting that despite the constant travel and learning curve, he never hesitated whenever Nigeria called.

“Wearing the green and white meant everything to me,” Musa said, emphasizing that representing Nigeria was always bigger than personal ambition.

The former Leicester City and CSKA Moscow forward retires as Nigeria’s most capped player, having featured in 111 matches for the Super Eagles — a historic achievement he says he holds with deep respect and honour.

Among the highlights of his international career, Musa pointed to Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph, describing that squad as a true reflection of national pride and unity. He also recalled his memorable goals at the FIFA World Cup, including strikes against Argentina and Iceland, which saw him become Nigeria’s highest goalscorer at the World Cup with four goals.

Musa also reflected on his time as captain of the Super Eagles, saying the role taught him responsibility, patience, and the importance of serving others. According to him, leadership was never about authority, but about supporting teammates, guiding younger players, and standing firm for the national badge, even during periods of criticism.

“Football gave me a career, but Nigeria gave me meaning,” he stated.

He expressed heartfelt appreciation to his teammates, coaches, backroom staff, administrators, and fans at home and abroad for their unwavering support throughout his career.

As he bows out of international football, Ahmed Musa says he does so with peace and gratitude, confident that he gave his best and hopeful about the future of the Super Eagles.

“Once an Eagle, always an Eagle,” he concluded.

Ahmed Musa’s legacy will remain firmly etched in Nigerian football history as a symbol of commitment, resilience, and national pride.
