Yaw Asare Jailed Two Years for Damaging Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange

The Dansoman Circuit Court has sentenced Yaw Asare, a 48-year-old head porter, to two years’ imprisonment at Nsawam Prison for unlawfully damaging public road infrastructure.

Asare was convicted of causing unlawful damage, contrary to Section 172 of the Criminal Offences Act (Act 29), after he was found guilty of vandalising parapet beams and accessories on the newly constructed Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange on June 9, 2025.

The Ministry of Roads and Highways, in a statement, expressed concern over the growing trend of vandalism and unlawful destruction of road infrastructure across the country. It noted that such acts, often including vehicular crashes involving traffic lights and the deliberate damaging of road fixtures, place heavy financial and safety burdens on the nation.

“The Ministry reminds the public that causing unlawful damage to public infrastructure is an offence,” the statement read, adding that it will continue to collaborate with the Ghana Police Service to ensure that culprits face the full rigours of the law.

The sentencing of Yaw Asare is expected to serve as a warning to others who may be tempted to engage in similar unlawful acts against public infrastructure.
