Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe Constituency and 2nd Deputy Minority Whip, Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has issued a strong call to action to address the persistent and unannounced power outages that have plagued his constituency in recent months.
In an official statement released from Parliament, Hon. Shaib described the frequent blackouts—commonly referred to as dumsor—as a major concern, noting that they often occur without prior notice or communication from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) or the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo).
“These unplanned outages have caused widespread disruption to households, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and businesses,” the MP stated. “The consequences are dire, hampering economic activity, endangering lives, and compromising the delivery of essential services.”
While acknowledging that the current power crisis is a national challenge, Hon. Shaib emphasized that Weija-Gbawe has been disproportionately affected. He reported that some communities in the constituency have endured continuous outages lasting more than four days, with others experiencing even longer blackouts.
Despite several engagements with ECG officials, he lamented that no meaningful progress has been made. “While we have received assurances of GRIDCo’s intervention, residents of Weija-Gbawe continue to endure the burden of unreliable electricity supply,” he said.
The MP has therefore issued a firm yet respectful appeal to ECG, GRIDCo, and the Ministry of Energy to take immediate and decisive steps to permanently resolve the issue.
“The people of Weija-Gbawe deserve better,” Hon. Shaib concluded.
