The Minority in Parliament has expressed deep sorrow and outrage following the tragic incident at the El-Wak Sports Stadium on Wednesday, where six young Ghanaians lost their lives and several others sustained injuries during a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise.
In an official statement, Minority Leader Osafo Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin described the event as a “catastrophic failure of crowd control and safety planning,” stressing that the young applicants arrived with “hope and patriotic zeal” but were met with preventable danger instead of protection.
According to the Minority, the deadly stampede marks an unprecedented disaster in the history of military and security recruitment exercises in Ghana. They insist the incident raises serious questions about the preparedness, planning, and supervision of the exercise.

Calls for Independent Probe and Immediate Reforms
While acknowledging that the Ghana Armed Forces has initiated a preliminary enquiry, the Minority insists this is not enough. They are demanding:
- An independent, thorough and time-bound investigation, with findings made public within 14 days.
- A temporary suspension of all recruitment exercises until proper crowd management, emergency response systems, and safety standards are guaranteed.
- Administrative and legal consequences for individuals whose negligence or poor planning contributed to the tragedy.
- Comprehensive reforms for future recruitment processes, including online registration, staggered reporting times, certified venue assessments, emergency medical presence, and coordination with civilian emergency agencies.
Condolences and Call for Safety
The Minority extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery. They emphasized that national service should never put lives at risk and urged young applicants to follow official instructions and attend only when properly invited.
However, they stressed that while safety requires cooperation, the ultimate responsibility for a secure recruitment environment rests with the authorities.
Demands from the Minority
The statement further outlined clear expectations:
- A detailed public report on the tragedy within two weeks
- A timeline for implementing corrective measures
- Compensation and support for affected families
- A firm commitment from the GAF and government to prevent a recurrence
Describing the deaths as a “national tragedy,” the Minority Leader concluded by emphasizing the urgency for decisive action and accountability to restore public confidence.
“Six lives have been lost. Six families are mourning. Six futures have been extinguished,” Afenyo-Markin stated. “This nation must ensure such a preventable tragedy never happens again.”
