Kennedy Agyapong Meets with Former MMDCEs, Vows to Restore Power to Grassroots Leadership

Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central and presidential hopeful, Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening local governance and party unity during a high-profile meeting with 268 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) at his private office in Accra.

Describing the engagement as “frank and forward-looking,” Mr. Agyapong emphasized the urgent need to rebuild the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on the pillars of unity, fairness, and grassroots respect. He acknowledged the pivotal role MMDCEs have played in national development and expressed deep concern over what he described as their unfair treatment under the previous administration.

“Excessive centralization in Accra has seriously undermined local governance,” Agyapong stated. “Our MMDCEs were stripped of real power, and that has slowed development at the community level. Under my leadership, that will change.”

The Assin Central firebrand, who has officially declared his intention to contest in the party’s upcoming presidential primaries, said restoring dignity to public service and giving real authority to local officials will be central to his agenda if elected.

He further assured the former MMDCEs that their institutional knowledge and leadership experience would not go to waste in the future direction of the party and the country.

“It’s time to give power back to the people on the ground,” he declared. “Together, we will rebuild and rise.”

The meeting is seen by many political observers as a strategic move by Kennedy Agyapong to consolidate grassroots support and position himself as a champion of decentralization and party reform.

With tensions growing ahead of the NPP primaries, Agyapong’s remarks are expected to resonate strongly with the party’s base, especially among those who feel sidelined in recent years.
