The Government of Ghana has expressed strong protest and deep concern over what it describes as the ill-treatment of Ghanaian nationals by Israeli authorities at the Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv.
In an official statement issued on Tuesday, the government said it has observed with grave concern that since Sunday, December 7, 2025, Ghanaian travellers arriving in Israel have allegedly been deliberately targeted and subjected to inhumane and traumatic treatment at the airport.
According to the statement, seven Ghanaian nationals were detained at the airport without justifiable cause on the day in question. Among those detained were four members of a Parliamentary delegation who were travelling to Israel to participate in the ongoing Annual International Cybersecurity Conference in Tel Aviv. The lawmakers were reportedly released only after more than five hours of intense diplomatic intervention by Ghanaian authorities.

The remaining three Ghanaian travellers were deported on the next available flight and have since returned to Ghana.
The Government of Ghana described the actions of the Israeli authorities as discriminatory and humiliating, stressing that the treatment amounted to unfair targeting of Ghanaian citizens. It conveyed its strong reservations about the manner in which its nationals were treated at Israel’s main international entry point.
The statement further highlighted the long-standing cordial relations between Ghana and Israel, noting that the two countries have enjoyed friendly diplomatic ties for over six decades, with significant volumes of unimpeded travel by citizens of both nations. Against this background, the government described the conduct of the Israeli authorities as provocative, unacceptable, and inconsistent with the historical friendship between the two countries.
Ghana also rejected claims by the Israeli government that the incident stemmed from alleged non-cooperation by Ghana’s Embassy in Tel Aviv regarding the deportation of Ghanaians in Israeli custody. The government described the justification as untenable, insisting that its mission in Israel has been responsive and has acted in full compliance with international law.
As part of its response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration announced that it would summon officials of the Israeli Embassy in Accra to convey Ghana’s displeasure in the strongest possible terms.
The government added that it is currently considering appropriate reciprocal measures, while reaffirming its commitment to protecting the dignity, rights, and welfare of Ghanaian citizens travelling abroad.
