A funeral ceremony at Obuasi was disrupted on Saturday, November 29, 2025, after the Dompoasehene, Nana Kwabena Ponko, was shot in an incident suspected to be an assassination attempt.
The traditional leader was attending the final funeral rites of the late mother of Obuasi West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Faustilove Kannin, when the shooting occurred at the funeral grounds, triggering fear and confusion among mourners.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the incident happened shortly after Nana Kwabena Ponko had been seated. An unidentified individual reportedly fired shots, hitting the chief and prompting attendees to take cover.

He received immediate assistance and was transported to the Obuasi Government Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Security personnel on the scene, supported by some funeral attendees, quickly moved in to apprehend the suspected shooter. The suspect was subsequently handed over to the Ghana Police Service and remains in custody as investigations continue.
Police have begun official enquiries to establish the motive behind the attack and identify any possible accomplices. Authorities have assured the public of a thorough investigation as the community awaits further updates.
