Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening Ghana’s justice delivery system, following a high-level meeting with the leadership of the Judiciary.
The Vice President received the Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Baffoe Bonnie, accompanied by the Judicial Secretary of the Office of the Chief Justice, Mr. Musah Ahmed, and Prof. Raymond Atuguba, at her office this week. The delegation briefed her on the Judiciary’s key achievements over the past year and outlined priority initiatives for the year ahead.
During the meeting, the Chief Justice detailed a series of measures aimed at decongesting the courts and improving efficiency. These include the introduction of morning and afternoon court sessions, the expansion of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) services, and the establishment of specialised courts, notably Galamsey courts dedicated to prosecuting illegal mining cases.
Justice Baffoe Bonnie also announced ongoing revisions to the Rules of Court, which are expected to come into force by March, as part of broader efforts to modernise judicial procedures. In addition, proposals were presented to decentralise the Ghana Law School entrance examination by accrediting selected law faculties across the country to administer a standardised examination nationwide.
Concerns regarding security and office space at the Supreme Court Complex were also discussed. The Chief Justice disclosed that plans are underway for the construction of a new Supreme Court complex to address these challenges. He further highlighted efforts to accelerate the implementation of E-Justice, with the goal of making the digital justice system fully operational.
Vice President Opoku-Agyemang expressed her appreciation for the visit and the comprehensive briefing. She reaffirmed her strong support for the Judiciary’s reform agenda, particularly initiatives aimed at reducing case backlogs, improving efficiency, and enhancing access to justice for all Ghanaians.
She underscored the importance of a well-resourced and modern Judiciary in strengthening the rule of law and supporting national development, assuring the delegation of the government’s continued collaboration with the Judicial Service to achieve these goals.
