A tragic incident has struck the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) after two of its officers were shot by unknown assailants at Nangani in the Tempani District of the Upper East Region on Sunday night.
According to a statement from the Service, the officers — Assistant Immigration Control Officer I (AICO I) Philip Lartey and AICO I Cosmos Dakurah — were ambushed and shot while returning from duty on a motorbike around 8:30 p.m.
Both officers sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to the Busonde Clinic in Tempani for initial medical care before being transferred to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital for further treatment.

Tragically, AICO I Cosmos Dakurah succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Monday, November 3, 2025, while AICO I Philip Lartey remains under medical care.
The Ghana Immigration Service, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, has launched a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack. A joint team from the National Headquarters has been deployed to the Upper East Region to support investigations and provide reassurance to officers affected by the incident.
In a statement signed by Deputy Commissioner of Immigration Maud Anima Quainoo, the Service expressed its deep sorrow over the loss of the officer and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, and friends of the late AICO I Cosmos Dakurah.
“The Service vehemently condemns any act of violence directed against its personnel, who serve with dedication to safeguard the nation’s territorial integrity and contribute to national security,” the statement read.
The Comptroller-General of Immigration and the Inspector-General of Police have both pledged to ensure that the perpetrators of this “heinous crime” are brought to justice.
The Ghana Immigration Service reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of all its officers and vowed to continue collaborating closely with security agencies to protect its personnel nationwide.
