The Government of Ghana has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives and widespread devastation in Jamaica caused by Hurricane Melissa, a powerful Category 5 storm that struck the Caribbean nation on Tuesday, 28th October 2025.
In an official statement issued in Accra, President John Dramani Mahama extended heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Jamaica. Through a diplomatic note sent to Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, President Mahama conveyed Ghana’s sympathy to the bereaved families, wished the injured a speedy recovery, and expressed solidarity with all those left homeless by the disaster.
“The Republic of Ghana stands in solidarity with Jamaica as the nation navigates these difficult times,” the statement read. “We are confident in the resilience and determination of the Jamaican people to overcome this tragedy and rebuild their beautiful country.”

The Government of Ghana further assured the Government and people of Jamaica of its continued support, solidarity, and best wishes as recovery efforts intensify in the aftermath of the storm.
Hurricane Melissa has been described as one of the most destructive tropical storms to hit the region in recent years, leaving behind significant damage to infrastructure, homes, and livelihoods across several Jamaican communities.
