Galamsey: Generational Rights Protection Society protests for stronger action

The Generational Rights Protection Society is ramping up pressure on the government to take decisive action against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey. The protest, led by media personality Okatakyie  Afrifa-Mensah, seeks to amplify concerns over the government's handling of the galamsey menace and to propose a more aggressive approach to ending it. POLICE ARREST 47 IN MASSIVE ANTI-GALAMSEY SWOOP IN WESTERN REGION

A joint intelligence-led anti-galamsey operation has led to the arrest of 47 individuals in connection with illegal mining activities in the Western Region. The four-day operation, which began on April 17, 2025, targeted illegal mining along the Tano River and within the Aboi, Subri, and Nimiri forest reserves. According to the Ghana Police Service, the suspects include 39 Ghanaians and 8 Chinese nationals. A significant number of exhibits were recovered during the operation, including 17 excavators, 1 bulldozer, 4 motorbikes, 2 Toyota Hilux pickups, 1 Toyota Rav4 vehicle, 4 pump action guns, 1 single barrel gun, 54 live BB cartridges, and 8 pumping machines. Seven Arrested for Illegal Mining on Black Volta River in Upper West Region

The Upper West Regional Police Command has arrested seven individuals for engaging in illegal mining activities along the Black Volta River at Chiantanga Community, near Dorimon in the Wa West District. The suspects, identified as Sabugu Razak, Ibrahim Zuberu, Alex Amedzake, John Cobblah, Promise Dufe, Angelina Akpese, and Rebecca Tumawu, were apprehended on Thursday, April 10, 2025, during a targeted operation aimed at curbing illegal mining, also known locally as “galamsey,” which continues to pose a major threat to water bodies and ecosystems in the region. Speaker of Parliament warns MPs against involvement in galamsey 

Mr Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, on Tuesday warned Members of Parliament (MPs) that any involvement in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, will face severe repercussions.  ".... Honourable members, galamsey must be confronted head on. If any of you happen to be involved in galamsey, please advise yourself. You must be prepared as a house to bite the bullet.
