The Upper West Regional Police Command has arrested seven individuals for engaging in illegal mining activities along the Black Volta River at Chiantanga Community, near Dorimon in the Wa West District.
The suspects, identified as Sabugu Razak, Ibrahim Zuberu, Alex Amedzake, John Cobblah, Promise Dufe, Angelina Akpese, and Rebecca Tumawu, were apprehended on Thursday, April 10, 2025, during a targeted operation aimed at curbing illegal mining, also known locally as “galamsey,” which continues to pose a major threat to water bodies and ecosystems in the region.
Police retrieved several items from the site of the operation, including ten (10) Changfang machines used in alluvial mining, two unregistered tricycles (PNE and Apsonic), a motorbike with registration number M-24-NR 6010, another registered M-23-UW 4413, and two unregistered Haojue and Apsonic motorbikes. Authorities also found six student mattresses, believed to have been used by the miners on site.
The arrested individuals are currently in police custody and assisting with ongoing investigations. They are expected to be arraigned before court soon.
The Upper West Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to fighting illegal mining in the area and urged the public to support efforts to protect natural resources. The operation highlights growing concerns over the environmental damage caused by illegal mining, particularly along vital water bodies such as the Black Volta.
Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
