POLICE ARREST 47 IN MASSIVE ANTI-GALAMSEY SWOOP IN WESTERN REGION

A joint intelligence-led anti-galamsey operation has led to the arrest of 47 individuals in connection with illegal mining activities in the Western Region. The four-day operation, which began on April 17, 2025, targeted illegal mining along the Tano River and within the Aboi, Subri, and Nimiri forest reserves.

According to the Ghana Police Service, the suspects include 39 Ghanaians and 8 Chinese nationals. A significant number of exhibits were recovered during the operation, including 17 excavators, 1 bulldozer, 4 motorbikes, 2 Toyota Hilux pickups, 1 Toyota Rav4 vehicle, 4 pump action guns, 1 single barrel gun, 54 live BB cartridges, and 8 pumping machines.

The police confirmed that 41 of the suspects were arraigned before court earlier today. Of those, 29 were remanded into custody to reappear on April 30, while 12 others are scheduled to reappear on May 2, 2025. The remaining 7 suspects are expected to face court proceedings tomorrow, April 23.

In a related move to strengthen enforcement in mining zones, the Police Administration has reshuffled several key commanders in illegal mining hotspots. The reshuffle affects some Divisional and District Commanders in the Eastern, Western, and Western North Regions, a decision the Police say is intended to bring renewed energy to the fight against illegal mining.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to clamping down on illegal mining, promising to intensify operations and enforce environmental protection laws across the country.
