Regional Maritime University inaugurates 50-bed capacity hostel, video conferencing facilities

The Board of Governors of the Regional Maritime University (RMU) has inaugurated a 50-bed capacity hostel and an ultra-modern video conferencing facility for the University.

These facilities were sponsored by the Republic of Sierra Leone and Republic of Liberia respectively to support and promote maritime education in the sub-region.

Other facilities inaugurated are Mosque, Desktop Steering Simulators,  Boat and GMDSS Laboratory.

Alhaji Fanday Turay, the Chancellor of RMU, commended the Republic of Sierra Leone for keeping up with the continuing contribution to the growth and development of the University.

The Chancellor, led the Board of Governors to inaugurate these facilities at the opening of the 33rd Meeting of the RMU Board in Accra. 

He also commended the Republic of Liberia on the sponsorship of a 50-bed capacity hostel.

He said these incredible developments also showed their collective commitment to the regional institution.

“These are truly the ways we should be competing as member states to do more and more for the University,” he added.

He said he had no doubt that with such pace of assistance, the University would in no time leap to greater heights in terms of infrastructural development.

He expressed appreciation to other members of the Board for the support, adding that “Let us continue to harness the spirit of unity and integration as we advance the cause of the University.”

Mr Ebrima Sillah, the Minister of Transport, Works and Infrastructure of the Republic of The Gambia, said The Gambia remained fully committed to RMU’s growth and excellence.

He said one of the proudest moments was the construction and inauguration of a 54-bedroom capacity hostel for the students in 2017 on the RMU campus.

“This investment was motivated by our belief that a conducive learning environment is central to academic excellence and success,” he added.

He said these upgrades would significantly enhance the teaching and learning experience likewise reflect the importance of infrastructure investment in enhancing academic standards.

“These collective efforts exemplify the kind of practical, result-orientated cooperation that is needed to sustain the RMU as a centre of maritime excellence in West and Central Africa,” he said.

He said such competition for support to the university was the type the Board want to see more often to enable them to push this noble African pride into a world-class university of maritime training. 

The Minister said The Gambia reremained committed to working with all Member States, the Board of Governors and the RMU leadership and the management and faculties to continue strengthening this great institution academically, financially and structurally.
