Police have arrested a commercial bus driver and his mate after intercepting a Savelugu-bound bus carrying a large cache of ammunition.
The suspects, Mohammed Gzali (42) and Mohammed Jabir, were arrested on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at about 7:00 p.m. at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier during a routine inspection of a Kia Grand Bird bus (AK 1309–21) travelling from Accra to Tamale and Savelugu.

A search of the vehicle uncovered a fertiliser sack hidden among passengers’ luggage, containing 1,050 rounds of AAA and BB cartridges.

The driver told police the sack was given to him at the terminal as a parcel to be delivered to a person he knows only as “Oboye” in Tamale.
The bus has been impounded, the ammunition seized, and both suspects are currently in custody assisting police with investigations.

Police say efforts are underway to trace the source and intended recipient of the ammunition, and further updates will be communicated.
