The government has officially inaugurated the National Timber Monitoring Team, a specialized task force mandated to oversee all timber-related activities within the country’s forest reserves.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the government charged members of the newly formed team to carry out their duties with the highest level of diligence, professionalism, and integrity. The team is expected to serve as the nation’s frontline defense against illegal logging and other activities that threaten the sustainability of Ghana’s forest resources.
According to the government, the National Timber Monitoring Team will play a critical role in eliminating illegal logging, preventing encroachment into protected forest areas, and halting the degradation of forest reserves. The unit will also ensure strict compliance with forestry laws and sustainable forest management principles.

The initiative has been described as a strategic shift aimed at revitalizing the timber sector, which remains a key contributor to national development and employment. Through enhanced monitoring and enforcement, the government says it is determined to reset the industry on a new path defined by transparency, sustainability, and operational efficiency.
Officials emphasized that the protection of forest resources cannot be achieved by government alone. The public, traditional authorities, industry players, and local communities were urged to support the work of the monitoring team and report any illegal activities within forest reserves.
“The protection of our forests is a shared responsibility,” the government noted, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s natural heritage for present and future generations.
The establishment of the National Timber Monitoring Team marks a significant step in strengthening forest governance and promoting sustainable use of Ghana’s timber resources.
