Former Minister of Energy and Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede that occurred during Wednesday’s military screening exercise at the El Wak Stadium in Accra.
In a heartfelt message, Dr. Prempeh extended his condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a swift and full recovery.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic stampede that occurred during yesterday’s military screening exercise. My heartfelt condolences go to the families who have lost their loved ones, and I wish the injured a swift and full recovery,” he stated.

He described the incident as a painful reminder of the growing number of tragedies that have afflicted the nation in recent times.
“This year has brought too many painful losses to our nation, and the tragedy at the El Wak Stadium deepens that sorrow,” he lamented.
Dr. Prempeh also emphasized that young Ghanaians seeking the opportunity to serve their country should never have to suffer harm or lose their lives in the process.
“Young men and women simply seeking a chance to serve their country should never return home in pain, or not return at all,” he added.
Calling for urgent reforms to prevent such incidents in the future, he urged the nation to act with wisdom, compassion, and urgency.
“As a nation, may we find wisdom, compassion, and urgency to make reforms that ensure such tragedies never happen again,” Dr. Prempeh concluded.
The stampede, which occurred during the 2025/2026 Ghana Armed Forces recruitment screening, claimed the lives of six potential recruits and left several others injured.
Authorities have since launched investigations into the incident to determine the cause and implement measures to prevent future occurrences.
