How a uranium mine became a pawn in the row between Niger and France

In the latest sign of a dramatic deterioration in relations, Niger's military rulers appear increasingly determined to drive France out of any significant sector in their economy - and particularly uranium mining. This week the French state nuclear company Orano announced that the junta - which deposed France's ally, President Mohamed Bazoum, in a coup in July 2023 - had taken operational control of its local mining firm, Somaïr.  The company's efforts to resume exports have for months been blocked by the regime and it is being pushed into financial crisis. So the timing...

US woman jailed for fatally shooting neighbour through door

A Florida woman who fatally shot her neighbour through her front door last year has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.  Susan Lorincz, 60, opened fire on 35-year-old Ajike "AJ" Owens as she knocked on Lorincz's locked door during a dispute about the victim's children playing outside in the city of Ocala. According to Owens's family and an affidavit, Lorincz, who is white, had shouted racial epithets at the children of Owens, who was black, before the shooting on 2 June 2023. A jury convicted Lorincz in August of one count of manslaughter with a firearm and one count of assault. The trial tested Florida's Stand Your Ground law, which permits use of deadly force in self-defence. The fatal shooting followed a series of quarrels between Lorincz and Owens that resulted ...

He spent almost three decades in prison in South Africa before being freed on parole in 2022, sparking protests and an outcry, in a nation still grappling with racism and apartheid's legacy. Walus is set to leave South Africa on Friday night and the Polish government will pay for the deportation, said Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber.  South African Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshav...
