Accra is rapidly positioning itself as a major diplomatic centre for Global South cooperation, following the approval of the Accra Reset Secretariat, which will now be headquartered in Ghana.
As Africa’s Champion of Health, President John Dramani Mahama has already hosted several major international forums this year and is set to open the WHX Leaders Summit in Ghana today. The establishment of the Secretariat marks a new chapter in the country’s growing role in shaping global governance and economic reform.
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo announced the development during a keynote address at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, where he represented President Mahama — the architect of the Accra Reset and the African Union Champion for Reparations.

Obasanjo told world leaders that situating the Secretariat in Accra places Ghana at the centre of a new diplomatic movement focused on redefining international development cooperation. He revealed that more than two dozen former presidents and senior global figures from Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, and the Caribbean have already joined the initiative.
With the launch of its Secretariat, the Accra Reset aims to drive an ambitious agenda to reshape Global North–Global South relations. The initiative will promote reforms in the global financial system, fairer trade agreements, equitable access to technology, and a development approach led by countries rather than donor-driven institutions.
“The Accra Reset is giving voice to the aspirations of the Global South,” Obasanjo said. “President Mahama’s vision is that development must be country-led, regionally supported, and globally aligned. The Secretariat in Accra will be central to pursuing that mission.”
Obasanjo noted that decisions taken under South Africa’s G20 presidency align closely with Mahama’s agenda — including efforts to strengthen global financial architecture, expand access to vaccines and health innovations, and enhance developing countries’ representation in international decision-making.
The Secretariat’s launch also coincides with work by a High-Level Panel preparing a major report on global governance reform. The report will be presented to Heads of State from both the Global North and South, marking one of the most significant cross-regional reform collaborations in recent years.
Analysts say Ghana’s selection as the host country highlights its reputation as a stable, neutral, and influential voice in global development. From Accra, the Secretariat will coordinate policy research, convene international dialogues, and connect governments with the private sector and civil society.
With the Accra Reset moving into full operational mode, Ghana now stands at a strategic crossroads of global reform efforts — giving Accra a commanding voice in shaping new economic and governance models for the Global South.
