Veep Jane Naana Engages NHIA Leadership; Praises Renewed Confidence in NHIS

The Vice President of the Republic, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has commended the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) for what she described as significant progress in strengthening public confidence in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The commendation followed a productive meeting she held with NHIA leadership, led by Chief Executive Dr. Divine Ndonbi Banyubala. During the engagement, the Deputy Chief Executive for Operations, Dr. Senanu Kwesi Djokoto, provided an extensive briefing on recent developments within the scheme.

According to the NHIA, enrolment numbers continue to rise nationwide, signalling growing trust in the NHIS. The Vice President was also informed that the uncapping of NHIS funds has released over GHC 3.4 billion into the health sector, enabling more regular and prompt payments to service providers and helping health facilities operate more efficiently.

Progress on Free Primary Health Care and the Ghana Health Trust Fund

The Authority updated the Vice President on the implementation of the Free Primary Health Care policy, which will be fully covered under the NHIS across the country.

Additionally, officials highlighted the establishment of the Ghana Health Trust Fund (MahamaCares)—a new initiative aimed at supporting the treatment of critical and life-threatening illnesses including cancers, kidney disease, heart conditions, and other severe ailments.

However, the meeting also raised concerns about isolated reports of illegal charges demanded by some health facilities despite ongoing reforms. Dr. Banyubala assured the Vice President that the Authority is taking firm steps to address the issue.

Call for Preventative Health and Stronger Public Education

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that preventative healthcare, sanitation, and public education must become key pillars of Ghana’s health delivery system. She also encouraged enhanced oversight of medical laboratory operations to ensure ethical practices and protect patients who rely on sensitive diagnostic services.

Need for Broad Public Sensitization

Ahead of major policy rollouts, the Vice President urged the NHIA and other relevant institutions to intensify public sensitization, ensuring that citizens fully understand health reforms designed for their benefit.

Government’s Commitment

She congratulated the NHIA for its hard work and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a healthcare system rooted in dignity, fairness, and equal access for all Ghanaians.
