Two Members of Believers Worship Center Killed, 21 Injured in New Year Highway Crash

At least two people lost their lives and 21 others sustained injuries on the night of January 1, 2025, following a serious road traffic accident involving a bus transporting church members along the Assin Fosu–Kumasi highway in the Central Region.

Preliminary reports indicate that the crash occurred around 9:00 p.m. at Assin Dansame as the bus was returning from a 31st Night crossover service held in Kumasi. The vehicle was conveying members of the Believers Worship Centre—also known as Second Chance Church—back to Assin Fosu and Breman Asikuma.

The bus, which bore Methodist Wesley Church signage, is said to have run into a group of people participating in a street parade, resulting in multiple casualties.

Casualties

  • Two people were confirmed dead at the scene
  • Twenty-one others suffered injuries ranging from minor to severe

One of the deceased has been identified as Maame Yaa, a 21-year-old apprentice and a student of Sunyani Technical University. The identity of the second victim had not been immediately disclosed at the time of reporting. Both reportedly died on the spot.

The injured were rushed to various health facilities across the region, with some requiring emergency medical attention due to the severity of their injuries.

Following the incident, tensions rose among some residents—particularly the youth in the area. In the ensuing unrest, the bus involved in the accident was vandalised and completely destroyed. Police officers were swiftly deployed to the scene to restore calm and prevent further violence.

Police Response and Investigation

The Central North Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) confirmed the incident. The Regional MTTD Commander, ASP Wonder Lumor, said police have launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the crash.

According to him, the probe will examine factors including driver conduct, the roadworthiness of the vehicle, compliance with road safety regulations, and crowd control measures during street celebrations.

Renewed Road Safety Concerns

The tragedy has once again brought road safety issues to the forefront, especially during festive periods marked by late-night travel, congested highways, and unregulated street activities.

Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution during celebrations and called on organisers of street parades and religious events to work closely with security agencies to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
