President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said that the recruitment of over 10,000 police officers and strategic investments in security infrastructure have strengthened Ghana’s ability to combat threats and ensure peace.
In his State of the Nation Address (SONA) to Parliament on Friday, he highlighted key interventions including the introduction of aircraft for the Police Service, marking a first for the country.
The President also noted the acquisition of advanced surveillance systems and various infrastructural upgrades for both the police and the military.
These measures, he stated, had significantly enhanced the country’s security framework, positioning Ghana to maintain peace and effectively address potential threats.
“The establishment of forward operating bases (FOBs), such as the one I commissioned some two weeks ago in Ezinlibo in the Western Region, the Barracks Regeneration Project…
“The equipping of the military and police, with the Police receiving helicopters for the first time in our nation’s history, the acquisition of advanced surveillance systems, and recruitment of over ten thousand (10,000) police officers have enhanced our capability to combat threats and maintain peace”, he stated.
President Akufo-Addo commended the success of Ghana’s anti-terrorism initiatives and cross-border security programs, emphasizing the country’s commitment to both national and regional safety.
He noted that the authority of the top leadership within the Ghana Armed Forces had been strengthened as part of broader efforts to safeguard the nation’s security.
He also revealed the promotion of key military officials, marking a significant step in enhancing the country’s defence capabilities as he concludes his tenure.
“I am pleased, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, to announce the elevation of the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) to the rank of General, and the Chiefs of Army Staff, Navy Staff, Air Staff, and the Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters to the rank of Lieutenant General or its equivalent”, he said.
The President emphasized that the successful implementation of anti-terrorism and cross-border security initiatives had solidified Ghana’s position as a key player in regional and global defense.
He credited these achievements for boosting the country’s international partnerships in peacekeeping and security.
The President also pointed to the government’s commitment to addressing the housing deficit within the security services, with the initiation of the barracks regeneration project in 2017.
Further retooling efforts included the acquisition of over 100 Armoured Personnel Carriers, 70 Troop Utility Vehicles, and several Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAVs), among other military assets, all aimed at enhancing the operational capacity of Ghana’s armed forces.
