Peter Obi Calls for Unity and National Renewal at Enugu Political Gathering

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has called for unity, patriotic leadership, and urgent national renewal, declaring that “a New Nigeria is possible” if citizens unite to dismantle corruption and poor governance.

Mr. Obi made the call on Monday in Enugu during a high-level political meeting attended by prominent leaders from across Nigeria. The gathering brought together former governors Okwesili Nwodo of Enugu State, Achike Udenwa of Imo State, and Sam Egwu of Ebonyi State, as well as former Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha.

Also present were serving and former senators including Enyinnaya Abaribe, Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, and Gilbert Nnaji, alongside notable political and civic figures such as High Chief Ben Obi, Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, Prof. Pat Utomi, Prof. Osita Ogbu, and Chief Ralph Nwosu. Members of the Federal House of Representatives, State Houses of Assembly, and community leaders also participated.

The meeting further drew national attention with the presence of leaders from outside the South-East, led by African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Chairman and former Senate President, Senator David Mark, as well as Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, former Governor of Sokoto State, and Senator Oserheimen Osunbor, former Governor of Edo State.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Obi argued that Nigeria’s problems are not due to a lack of resources or talent, but rather the result of “deliberate sabotage by a political class that exploits the nation.” He stated that Nigeria has been “looted into poverty,” adding that the current system rewards mediocrity, punishes merit, and thrives on corruption and impunity.

He stressed the urgency of decisive action, saying the country must choose between continuing a cycle of decline or boldly confronting entrenched corruption and criminality in governance. Drawing from his nationwide engagements, including visits to internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, Mr. Obi noted that insecurity, hunger, and despair are widespread across all regions of the country.

Mr. Obi outlined a vision for economic transformation, emphasizing that with effective leadership, agriculture and manufacturing could become Nigeria’s top contributors to GDP. He said the country could transition from consumption to production, while addressing insecurity, unemployment, inflation, illiteracy, and corruption through transparent and accountable governance.

He concluded by calling on political leaders, supporters of the Obidient Movement, and opposition parties nationwide to form a broad-based coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by Senator David Mark. According to him, the coalition is anchored on patriotism and the national interest.

“This is a moment for unity and courage,” Mr. Obi said, urging Nigerians to seize the opportunity for national rebirth. “Let history record that Nigeria’s turning point begins here and now.”
