Man Remanded in Police Custody Over Viral Domestic Violence Incident

A 29-year-old fisherman, Nii Baah Afful, has been remanded into police custody by an Accra-based Gender Violence Court for allegedly assaulting a woman in a widely circulated viral video. He is expected to reappear in court on April 9, 2025.

The incident, which took place on Thursday, March 20, at Korle Gonno—a suburb of Accra—sparked widespread outrage after a video surfaced showing Afful assaulting a woman who was carrying an 8-month-old baby. The disturbing footage prompted swift action from both the public and law enforcement agencies.

Preliminary investigations by the Accra Regional Police revealed that the suspect and the victim, 21-year-old Francisca Aryee, live together and share two children. According to police, the assault occurred when Aryee attempted to leave for her mother’s house following a disagreement, but was pursued and attacked by Afful.

The Police Intelligence Unit apprehended Afful on Friday, March 22, 2025, at approximately 5:00 p.m. He is currently in custody as investigations continue. Authorities have since located and identified the victim, who is now receiving medical care and counseling.

In a statement, the Accra Regional Police Command emphasized its dedication to upholding justice and ensuring the safety of all citizens. The rapid response in this case underscores the Police’s commitment to tackling domestic violence and protecting vulnerable individuals.
