Ken Ofori-Atta Detained by US Immigration Authorities Over Stay Status

The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has detained Ghana’s former Minister for Finance, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, over issues relating to the status of his current stay in the United States.

In a public notice issued by his legal representatives, Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline & Partners (OBB), the law firm confirmed that the detention occurred yesterday and stressed that the matter is purely administrative.

According to the notice, Mr. Ofori-Atta has a pending petition for adjustment of status, a legal process under US immigration law that allows an individual to remain in the country lawfully beyond the validity period of an existing visa. The firm explained that such applications are common under US law and do not amount to any criminal wrongdoing.

The statement further disclosed that Mr. Ofori-Atta’s US-based legal team is in active contact with ICE and is confident that the issue will be resolved expeditiously.

The lawyers emphasized that the former finance minister is a law-abiding individual who is fully cooperating with US immigration authorities to regularize his status.

“The public is advised to note that Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta is fully cooperating with ICE to have this issue resolved,” the statement said.

The notice was signed by Justice Kusi-Minkah Premo, Esq., on behalf of the law firm, and issued from their Labone, Accra offices.

Meanwhile, the legal team has urged the public to remain calm as the process unfolds, assuring that the situation does not suggest any breach of US law beyond routine immigration procedures.
