Ho Assembly Relocates Slaughterhouse to Sokode Abbatoir

The Ho Municipal Assembly has announced the permanent relocation of the Ho Zongo Slaughterhouse to the Sokode Abattoir, effective Thursday, June 27, 2025.

This decisive move, according to municipal authorities, forms part of efforts to safeguard public health, improve hygiene standards, and enhance the quality of meat processing and distribution within the Municipality.

Announcing the decision at a stakeholder engagement meeting in Ho, Mr. Stephen Adom, Ho Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), said the relocation was necessitated by the worsening conditions at the Zongo Slaughterhouse, which posed grave health risks to both consumers and school children nearby.

“The old slaughterhouse has become structurally unsafe, unhygienic, and lacks basic amenities such as clean water. Its proximity to the Nuriya Islamic Basic School also makes it a serious health hazard to the pupils,” Mr. Adom stressed.

He noted that June 27, 2025, would be the final day for any slaughtering or meat processing activities at the Zongo site, after which security personnel and community taskforces would be deployed to monitor and enforce compliance with the directive.

“Any person or group found engaging in slaughtering or processing meat at the old site after the deadline will face sanctions, including fines, seizure of carcasses, and possible prosecution,” the MCE cautioned.

To facilitate safe and regulated meat distribution, Mr. Adom announced that a dedicated meat van would be commissioned to transport processed meat from the Sokode Abattoir to various markets, cold stores, and hotels across the municipality.

He called on butchers, kraal owners, meat sellers, market women, and other stakeholders to fully cooperate with the Assembly to ensure the successful implementation of the new arrangement.

“This measure is in the collective interest of public safety and aims to raise the standard of meat processing to modern, hygienic levels consistent with health regulations,” Mr. Adom added.

Some butchers and community members who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) expressed their dissatisfaction to the decision of relocation but acknowledged the need to maintain public health and sanitation standards in the municipality.

Mr. Abdul Karim, a local butcher, said while the decision would disrupt their operations temporarily, it was ultimately a good move to improve hygiene and avoid risks associated with the old facility.

The Sokode Abattoir, which has been upgraded with improved infrastructure, mechanized slaughtering facilities, and clean water supply, is expected to become the central hub for all meat processing in the Ho Municipality from June 27, 2025.

The Assembly has assured the public of its continuous commitment to promoting health, safety, and orderly business operations in the interest of the municipality’s growing population.
