GJA Elections Committee cautions against disruptive acts ahead of June 30 Polls

The Elections Committee of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has admonished individuals seeking to discredit the Association’s upcoming elections to desist from their unpatriotic actions.

In a statement issued Tuesday, in Accra, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, the Committee said allegations of a bloated register and opposition to proxy voting were being circulated without any evidence.

It warned that such conduct risked undermining public confidence in the electoral process.

“These claims have no basis in fact,” emphasised Mr Peter Martey Agbeko, Chairman of the Elections Committee.

He explained: “Proxy voting is a legitimate and widely accepted component of modern democratic electoral systems.

“What matters most is ensuring the process is safeguarded against abuse – and we have taken stringent steps to do just that.”

He reaffirmed the Committee’s commitment to fairness and transparency, stating that preparations for the Monday, June 30, 2025 national and regional elections were progressing steadily under the technical guidance of an advisor from the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

“Our mandate remains clear: to organise, conduct, and supervise a credible, transparent, and fair election in line with best practices,” the statement emphasised.

Mr Agbeko expressed regret over deliberate attempts by certain individuals to sow doubt and frustration, saying that the Committee welcomed credible concerns that are backed by verifiable facts.

However, it would not be distracted by unfounded accusations rooted in emotion or personal suspicion.

“For context, in the last GJA election, I served as Secretary of the Elections Committee. My colleague and I had to step up and lead the process when the then-Chairman resigned abruptly just four days before the election.

“Despite the sudden challenge, we conducted the election successfully,” he recalled, adding that this demonstrated the Committee’s resilience and dedication to duty.

He affirmed his personal resolve to remain at post and see the current process through “faithfully, professionally, and to the glory of God and the service of our Association.”

As part of measures to ensure inclusivity and transparency, the Elections Committee and the EC Technical Advisor have scheduled to engage all candidates in a meeting this evening (Tuesday June 24).

The Committee urged all stakeholders to uphold the integrity of the GJA and protect the democratic culture that underpins the Association.

It asked those with inquiries to contact the GJA Elections Committee via election.gja@gmail.com or call +233 244 96 5882.
