Asante Kotoko Condemns Violence as Supporter Nana Pooley Tragically Killed

Asante Kotoko has strongly condemned the violent incidents that marred their Ghana Premier League Matchweek 19 fixture against Nsoatreman FC at the Nana Koramansah Park. The club issued an official statement detailing the hostility faced by their team upon arrival at the stadium, including confrontations from sections of the home supporters. Despite the provocation, Kotoko remained committed to fair play and proceeded with the game in the spirit of sportsmanship.

The situation escalated during the match as missiles were thrown at Kotoko’s bench on multiple occasions, creating an unsafe environment for players and officials. The club’s head of media suffered a serious ear injury after being struck by an object. In a further shocking turn of events, some supporters invaded the pitch and physically attacked Kotoko’s goalkeeper, Mohammed Camara, while also hurling missiles at him.

Beyond the violence on the field, reports indicate that media personnel and travelling supporters from Kumasi were also attacked. Tragically, one of Kotoko’s well-known supporters, Nana Pooley, was stabbed during the violence and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The club described this loss of life as devastating and extended their deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the entire Asante Kotoko fraternity.

The violent scenes also led to extensive damage to Kotoko’s equipment, including laptops, communication devices used by the technical team, and other essential audio-visual gadgets, all of which were destroyed in the chaos. The club stated that this level of destruction was unacceptable and underscored the urgent need for stronger security measures at league venues to protect teams, officials, and supporters.

Despite the security breaches, Asante Kotoko completed the match in adherence to the integrity of the competition but expressed deep concern over the persistent hooliganism in Ghanaian football. The club pledged full cooperation with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in its investigations and called for swift and firm action against those responsible. Kotoko urged all stakeholders to take decisive steps to ensure the safety of all involved in the game while reaffirming their commitment to professionalism and fair play.
