A devoted Asante Kotoko supporter, Nana Pooley, has tragically lost his life after being stabbed during violent clashes at the club’s Ghana Premier League match against Nsoatreman FC at Nana Koramansah Park. The shocking incident occurred amid a tense atmosphere, with Kotoko players and officials facing hostility from sections of the home supporters.
According to an official statement from Asante Kotoko, the team was subjected to intimidation upon arrival at the stadium, which escalated into violence during the match. Missiles were thrown at Kotoko’s bench multiple times, creating an unsafe environment for players and officials. The club’s head of media suffered a serious ear injury after being struck by an object, while goalkeeper Mohammed Camara was physically attacked by invading supporters.
The violence extended beyond the field, as reports indicate that media personnel and travelling Kotoko supporters from Kumasi were also targeted. During the chaos, Nana Pooley was stabbed and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. His death has left the Asante Kotoko fraternity in mourning, with the club expressing deep sorrow and extending condolences to his family and loved ones.
Additionally, Kotoko suffered extensive damage to their equipment, including laptops, communication devices, and other essential gear used by their technical team, all of which were destroyed. The club condemned the incident as unacceptable and called for urgent measures to improve security at league venues to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Asante Kotoko has vowed to cooperate fully with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in its investigations and has called for swift action against those responsible. The club also urged all football stakeholders to take decisive steps to ensure the safety of players, officials, and supporters, emphasising their commitment to professionalism and fair play.
