Acting Defence Minister Ato Forson Addresses Parliament on El-Wak Stampede

The Acting Minister of Defence, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede that occurred earlier today at the El-Wak Military Sports Facility during the ongoing Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise.

Delivering an urgent statement before Parliament, Mr. Forson confirmed that six people have lost their lives, while five remain in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He added that 12 others are fairly critical, with the rest of the 34 total casualties in stable condition and under medical observation.

The minister clarified that not all of the victims were potential recruits and noted that the tragedy unfolded despite efforts by the Ministry to decentralize this year’s recruitment process.

“This year’s recruitment exercise is being conducted simultaneously across all regions — a novelty designed to decentralize the process, reduce congestion, and ensure fairness and accessibility nationwide,” Mr. Forson said. “Unfortunately, despite these measures, a stampede occurred at the El-Wak facility in Accra.”

In response to the incident, the Ministry of Defence has suspended recruitment activities in Accra until further notice. However, the exercise is reported to be continuing smoothly in all other regions.

Mr. Forson assured Parliament that the Ministry is collaborating with the Ghana Armed Forces, medical teams, and law enforcement agencies to support the injured and affected families. He also announced that the Ghana Armed Forces has instituted an internal Board of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances that led to the stampede.

“The Ministry deeply mourns the loss of life and extends condolences to the affected families,” he stated. “The safety and dignity of applicants remain paramount, and every necessary step will be taken to prevent a recurrence.”

The tragic incident has cast a shadow over what was intended to be a transparent and inclusive recruitment process aimed at giving equal opportunity to qualified applicants across the country.
