A whopping number of 43,503 registered voters in the Oforikrom constituency in the Ashanti region, failed to exercise their franchise during the December 07 general elections.
This represents 37.35 per cent of the 116,455 registered voters who were expected to vote in the elections.
On the elections day however, a total of 72,952 people came out to cast their ballot to elect their Member of Parliament and a President for Ghana.
Of this, 356 ballots were rejected by the Electoral Commission (EC), leaving 72,596 valid votes cast during the elections.
Mr Michael Kwasi Aidoo, a first-time applicant on the ticket of the NPP, was elected as the new Member of Parliament for the constituency.
He secured 47,709 of the valid votes cast to beat two other contestants, Mr Anwel Sadat of the NDC, who garnered 24,483 votes and Mr Benjamin Afrane Amankwaa, an independent candidate, who obtained 404 votes.
On the Presidential elections, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP polled 45,951, Mr John Mahama of the NDC had 24,976 votes, MrAlan Kwadwo Kyeremateng an independent candidate, obtained 408 votes while Nana Kwame Bediako also an independent candidate got 1,111.
All the other candidates obtained below 80 votes.
The total valid votes recorded for the presidential polls in the area were 72,640.
Some 340 ballots were counted as rejected ballots.
Comparing votes recorded by the NPP for Parliamentary (47,709) and Presidential (45,951) in the area, it was realized that 1,758 voters did not cast votes for the NPP presidential candidate.
Looking at the NDCs votes, more people (493) cast their ballots for the Presidential candidate than the Parliamentary candidate.
Oforikrom is one of the cosmopolitan areas of Kumasi with different tribal and ethnic groups with varied socio-economic status.
It is also the seat of academia and intelligentsia.
The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is in the constituency.
