The Vice President of the Republic, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has reiterated government’s commitment to completing abandoned market projects and revitalizing trading centers across the country.
On behalf of former President John Dramani Mahama, the Vice President visited Kumasi over the weekend, accompanied by Hon. Alex Segbefia, Hon. Ofosu Ampofo, and other advisors. They were joined in the Ashanti Region by Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene and NDC Regional Chairman, Nana Kwasi.

The delegation’s first stop was the historic Mamponteng Market in the Kwabre East Municipality. Established nearly three centuries ago, the market has long served as a vibrant trading hub for the community. In 2012, the government initiated an enhancement project to modernize the facility, but works have since stalled.

Addressing a durbar of chiefs, traders, and residents, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang assured the people of Mamponteng that government is determined to complete the project. She underscored that politics must always focus on development, adding that the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) has proven to be a “game changer” in market development, with 25% of the Fund now dedicated to the Market Enhancement Project.

“Markets are not just trading spaces; they are the heartbeat of our communities,” she stated. “It is our duty to ensure that our hardworking market women work in dignity and safety.”
The Vice President’s tour forms part of a broader effort by government to inspect and revive critical infrastructure projects nationwide, particularly those directly impacting local economies and livelihoods.
