Shooting Incident in Binduri Leaves Several Injured, Heightens Tensions in Township

A shooting incident in Binduri Township in the Upper East Region has left several people injured, sparking fear and heightening tensions in the already volatile area.

According to local sources, the incident occurred late Sunday evening, when unknown gunmen opened fire in a section of the town. Though details remain unclear, multiple residents are reported to have sustained injuries, with some receiving treatment at nearby health facilities. The identities of the assailants and the motive behind the attack are yet to be confirmed.

The violence has prompted swift action from national and regional security agencies. In response, the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Binduri and its surrounding communities. The curfew, which takes effect from Monday, March 24, 2025, will run daily from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

“The decision was made on the advice of the Upper East and North East Regional Security Councils to prevent further violence and restore calm,” the Minister stated in an official release from Accra.

In addition to the curfew, a total ban has been placed on the possession of arms, ammunition, and offensive weapons in the area. Residents have also been prohibited from wearing smocks and riding motorbikes—measures that authorities say are meant to limit the concealment of weapons and prevent coordinated attacks.

Security personnel have been deployed across the township to maintain order and enforce the curfew. Authorities are also urging community leaders, youth groups, and residents to remain calm and support efforts to resolve the conflict peacefully.

“We appeal to Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, and the youth to exercise restraint and avoid any acts of retaliation. Let us work together to restore peace and stability in Binduri,” the Minister added.

As investigations continue, residents are being encouraged to provide any information that could aid in apprehending the perpetrators. The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its commitment to uncovering the truth and bringing those responsible to justice.

This latest outbreak of violence underscores the fragile security situation in parts of the Upper East Region, where land disputes and chieftaincy disagreements have fueled unrest in the past. The government says it remains committed to long-term peacebuilding and conflict resolution efforts in the area.
